By TDE Editorial Team / 15th December 2020

BASED IN AN old boat house on the River Thames in London, Sarah Myerscough Gallery shows a select roster of craft-based international artist-designer-makers. This year Sarah Myerscough has launched The Natural Room, a series of handcrafted contemporary design and art pieces created from sustainably sourced, natural materials by individual artists, often made in collaboration with local communities. We invited her to answer our Christmas questionnaire.

Why this artist?
She is the most dynamic international female artist working in wood – and I love cedar, her preferred species for carving. I love the intensity and uncompromising nature of her sculptural work. The organic material adds to these qualities through complex compositional devices and frenetic powerful carving. The works appear other worldly, timeless and also vulnerable. When you see her slight frame and mild manner, it seems extraordinary that she produces such works.  They reveal her inner strength, creative ambition, determination and strength of character.  The narrative and sense of history are ever present and that is why I would love a large sculptural piece for Christmas!

Which piece of jewellery will you be wearing on Christmas day?
I have just bought myself a very decadent gift for Christmas that I will certainly be wearing on the big day! A fabulous freeform cut amethyst ring, set in 18 ct gold, by Mark Nuell.
