Congolese collector Sindika Dokolo has one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of African art – classical and contemporary – in the world. Kendell Geers is an artist and curator from South Africa, now based in Belgium, for whom the political and the poetic are deeply intertwined. Together, Dokolo and Geers have selected 150 works of art from Dokolo’s impressive collection, exhibiting exceptional classical pieces alongside contemporary art, sculpture, photography and performance art from Africa and the African diaspora. The show lifts African art out of an ethnographic shadow, and shines light on continuities in approach and belief between anonymous artists of the past, and global stars such as William Kentridge, Ana Mendieta, Lubaina Himid, Yinka Shonibare and Geers himself.
