IN A SIGN of the times, interior design company ADA, founded by Deniz and Turgay Huysal, has chosen to launch their inaugural collection of bespoke artisanal furniture by staging an art exhibition.

The company is driven by the ethos that domestic interiors are intimate spaces enlivened by stories and the links forged by their owners between the art, design and objects that animate them. Furniture is as important as painting, ceramics or sculpture to this expressive dialogue.

Taking inspiration from this, they have worked with Marcelle Joseph and Pi Artworks to reimagine the gallery space as the private home of a fictional art collector set in London in the present day. In honour of the Fitzrovia setting of the gallery, they have based their character on Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, conjuring an aesthete who is “a passionate, brilliant and eccentric character who lives and breathes art, navigating through time and gender.”

The exhibition is divided into two areas: a drawing room and a study, representing the twin selves of Orlando as both a man and a woman. The fictional Orlando lives for more than 300 years without ageing: the idea of the exhibition is that the furniture and the contemporary art are in an ever-evolving conversation, passed through generations.
