Design Loves Milano
Charity auction for Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan.
ON 12th MAY, the Italian auction house Cambi, based in Genoa and Milan, will hold an online charity auction of design, to raise funds for Ospedale Luigi Sacco, a leading teaching hospital in Milan.
The auction is the brainchild of Milan-based creative duo Annalisa Rosso and Francesco Mainardi, directors of design consultancy Mr. Lawrence, in collaboration with Cambi, who are applying neither a buyer’s nor a seller’s premium.
Milan is synonymous with design, its famous Salone the sector’s annual global gathering. With the Salone cancelled this year, designers and galleries watched in horror as the city they loved became the early epicentre of Europe’s coronavirus outbreak. Now they have responded generously to this alternative opportunity to support the city, offering either 50% or 100% of proceeds from each sale to the hospital.
The catalogue includes works by prominent international designers such as Fernando and Humberto Campana, Formafantasma, Roberto Sironi, Muller Van Severen and Analogia Project, to name a few.
And leading galleries – from Milan’s own Nilufar, Camp Design and Galleria Rossana Orlandi to Rome’s Giustini/Stagetti, SEEDS London and New York’s Studio 94 and Friedman Benda have contributed pieces. Historic pieces include glass from Murano, including pieces designed by Carlo Scarpa and Fulvio Bianconi, a Gio Ponti coffee table and iconic lights by Gino Sarfatti and Luigi Caccia Dominioni.
Travel to Milan may be off the cards for a while, but design lovers have an opportunity tomorrow to show that the city is still in their hearts and minds.
